Buckhead Vet: What to Avoid in Healthy Dog Treats

In News by Pharr Rd. Animal HospitalLeave a Comment

As a dog owner, you probably use treats every single day as a way to reward your pet for learning a new command, or just for being good.

You may be thinking a treat can be associated with a guilty pleasure, but this doesn’t have to be the case. The quality of the treats you choose is as important as the dog food itself.

Buckhead vet is here to give you some tips on choosing healthy dog treats. Here’s what you need to avoid when picking them.

Buckhead Vet: What To Avoid in Healthy Dog Treats

1. Sugar

As you already know, sugar is bad for us humans. It doesn’t provide any nutritional value whatsoever and it’s only empty calories. Your dog doesn’t need sugar in its diet as well because it can cause a number of different health issues, such as:

  • Obesity
  • Allergies
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Tooth decay
  • Arthritis
  • Cataracts

When buying treats, avoid products containing ingredients like sucrose, corn syrup, or caramel. These are the most used sugar substituents.

2. Salt

Dogs need salt, but as long as the intake does not exceed the reasonable limit. Your dog will probably get its daily dose of salt from the food you’re using to feed them.

Any excess intake can cause them to develop certain health issues, such as:

  • An increased heart rate
  • Increased water intake
  • Restlessness

However, if your dog has heart problems, you should avoid salty foods and treats altogether.

3. Dairy

For some dogs, food containing dairy, including treats, can be a cause for different allergies and sensitivities. If you’ve noticed your dog has symptoms in this category, discuss with your Buckhead vet first.

4. Soy

We tend to eat soy as a replacement for meat. It is also known as a cheap alternative for the protein we would otherwise get from meat-based products.

However, you should not be fooled. Soy does not provide as many health benefits, and dogs can be allergic to it. Our advice is to avoid it altogether.

5. Grain

It would be ideal if you could find a treat that is entirely grain-free. What your dog needs is meat, so try to find some healthy treats containing it.

Grain, on the other hand, will make your dog suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is something you don’t want.

6. Chocolate

Theobromine is a substance found in chocolate, and because of which, you should avoid giving your dog chocolate as a treat.

This substance is absorbed very slowly in dogs, causing a toxic reaction, which can result in their death. Dark and baking chocolate are two types containing high amounts of theobromine.
